Drain Line Repair in Compton, CA

Four Inches Out to Your Boundary | What the Six-Inch Rule Is Really Telling You | CSLB #1051553 | Se Habla Español

A drain line quote in Compton has a natural stopping point, and the code that fixes the pipe sizes is also what tells you where it is.

Your run carries a four-inch minimum out to the property line. Past that the minimum becomes six, and past that the pipe stops being yours. A quote that does not stop where your responsibility stops is one to read twice.

What Puts People on the Phone

01

The whole house has drained badly for as long as anyone remembers

When every fixture is equally sluggish, the branches are almost certainly innocent, and the shared run under the house is the suspect. Households adapt to it so gradually that nobody can date the change.

02

A length that has dropped and no longer runs downhill

Recurring slow drainage with no obstruction behind it. What the run needs is to be laid again to a fall, and the fall here has a published minimum with a written-permission floor beneath it.

03

A shallow lot where the fall is hard to hold

The case the local section takes up, and the code has a published answer for it.

04

An addition or a converted garage adding fixtures

New drainage tying into an old run, and often over ground where a building was later put on top of an existing line.

05

A quote that priced six-inch pipe running out to the main

Give it a second look. Six inches is the standard for the stretch past your property line, and in this city that stretch is the City's asset. Your estimate should stop before it.

Pricing & response

Pricing & Response

How much of the four-inch run inside your boundary has to change determines this, and the locate answers it first.

Labor discounts: military and first responders: 10% up to $100; seniors 65+ and teachers: 5% up to $50; first-time customers: 10% on qualifying repairs, one per job. Commercial and multi-unit properties are quoted per site. Referral credits run $25, $50 or $100 by job size, with a sewer replacement in the top band.

What the Work Covers on Each Side of the Step

01

Locating the run and establishing where your side of it ends

The four-inch minimum applies from the leading-out pipe to the property line. That length and its depth are what the figure is built on.

02

Building the run to the published fall

The rate the code names, set with an instrument rather than by eye. If the lot will not hold it, the route to a lesser-gradient run is through the Sewer Inspector, and it requires written authorization.

03

Cleanouts wherever the run changes direction

A Compton requirement, along with a straight last stretch. → Sewer cleanout compton

04

Handling a run that passes under a building

Regulated as its own class, extending two feet past the outer walls, and common here on additions and garage conversions built over an existing line.

05

The plumbing permit and the encroachment permit, both arranged

A trench that reaches the roadway draws fees from two separate departments. Both appear on the estimate at cost.

06

Inspection with the full run exposed

No staged backfilling here: the whole run has to be visible when the inspector arrives, from the Y at the sewer through to the building. That keeps the trench open longer, and the estimate reflects it.

When Four Inches Becomes Six

Compton's sewer code sets the diameters for a house connection, and the way it sets them repays a close read.

The run from the leading-out pipe to the property line has a minimum of 4 inches. From there onward the minimum becomes six. That much is ordinary. What is not ordinary is the second half of the sentence, which fixes where the six-inch requirement starts, and does it by describing the street.

Where combination curb and sidewalk is installed, six inches is required all the way from your property line out to the main. Where instead a parking space of two and a half feet or more sits between curb and sidewalk, that requirement starts at the curb line. In other words, a parkway strip of that width moves the point at which the pipe has to get bigger.

Be precise about who that second half applies to, because it is the part people get backward. The six-inch requirement governs the run from your boundary out to the main, and in Compton that run is the City's asset. So the provision describes the standard the connecting sewer was built to. What you buy is the four-inch run behind it, and a quote carrying six-inch pipe out to the main has just told you it priced the far side of your line.

The same section deals with fall, and this provision lands squarely on your side of the boundary. The published minimum gradient for an outside drain is a quarter inch in every foot of length. Where that rate is impracticable, and the City Sewer Inspector determines sanitary drainage can be obtained with less, a lesser gradient may be used on the Inspector's written authorization, and in no case may the fall drop below an eighth of an inch per foot. So, a shallow lot has a route; the route runs through an office, and there is a floor beneath it nobody may go under.

One more provision applies to a property that has grown. If a sewer line runs under a building, or a building was later erected over an existing line, that portion is regulated as its own class, and the rule extends two feet beyond the outer walls. In a city with as many additions and garage conversions as this one, that comes up.

Worth being exact about what this page covers, because two jobs sit either side of one line. Everything here concerns the run you own: the four-inch house connection out to your boundary, its fall and its cleanouts. The pipe on the far side of that boundary is a different asset with a different owner, and it has its own page. → Sewer line repair compton

How it runs

How the Step-up Point Gets Found

A camera pass and a locate come first, since nothing about diameter or fall can be settled from the surface.

The property line is marked and the parkway measured, so what you are quoted can be read against what the code assigns to whom.

Fall is checked across the existing run with an instrument.

The estimate names the diameters, the fall, the permits, and the restoration standard.

Permits are obtained, the encroachment permit included where the trench reaches the roadway.

The line is built, and the full run is left open for one inspection.

Backfill and restoration follow, to the standard agreed at the outset.

What we cover

Why the Boundary is Marked Before the Number is Written

01

The four-inch run is measured rather than assumed

Length and depth from the leading-out pipe to the boundary are what the figure is built on, so both get taken before anything is written down.

02

Fall is measured with an instrument

A run laid by eye is a run nobody can defend afterward, and on a shallow lot the difference between adequate and inadequate is smaller than a person can see.

03

Both permits appear on the estimate

A job entering the street draws fees from two departments. Showing them separately at cost is the only way you can see what is ours and what is the City's.

What size should my line be?

Four inches is the code minimum for the run between your leading-out pipe and the property line. Two things follow. It sets a floor, so a quote offering six-inch pipe on your side of the boundary is offering more than the code requires, and that is worth asking about. And a diameter says nothing whatever about condition: a four-inch run can be sound, bellied, or collapsed, and only the camera distinguishes among them.

Why does the parkway matter?

Because it moves the point where the diameter has to increase on the runout to the main, and that runout belongs to the city. So, the measurement is a way of reading somebody's quote, not a figure of your own. Do it before any estimator arrives: walk out front, place a tape measure between your curb and your sidewalk, and write down the number.

My lot is too shallow for a quarter inch per foot.

There is a published route for it that runs through the city, not through a contractor, and the authorization is written. So, the thing to ask a bidder proposing a shallower fall is to see it. A lesser gradient agreed verbally in a trench on the day is one that has nothing behind it when the inspector arrives.

What about the pipe under my addition?

Regulated as its own class, and the rule reaches two feet beyond the outer walls. Say so when you call, and roughly when the work was done, because a run passing under a structure changes the scope of the conversation and nobody wants that discovered with a trench already open.

Does the estimate include the part past my property line?

It should not, and ours does not. A Compton owner's sewer ends at the edge of the property, and where a defect turns out to sit beyond it, you get the written finding to take to the City instead of a figure. → Sewer line repair compton

Why Fall Has a Floor and a Permission Slip

The quarter-inch standard exists because of how drainage works, and understanding that makes the lower limit make sense too. A drain carries two things traveling at different speeds. Liquid runs ahead easily; solids move because the liquid drags them. Too little slope and the liquid outruns the solids, leaving them behind, which is how a line that appears to drain fine develops a blockage months later out of material deposited a little at a time. Too much and the opposite happens: the water moves too fast to carry anything and the solids strand again. A quarter of an inch to the foot sits in the useful middle. An eighth is the point below which the physics stops working reliably, and Compton put a person and a written authorization between an installer and that decision rather than leaving it to the day.
