Repipe vs. Main Water Line Replacement: Which One You Need

Everything upstream of the meter box at the front edge of your property is delivery. Everything downstream of it ends at your taps. One job replaces piping on one side of that lid. Almost nobody knows which side of the box their problem is on, and it is not for lack of attention. Water failures announce themselves at the fixture. The comparison turns slippery right here. The physical split and the responsibility split are two distinct lines and do not always coincide. Which portion of the buried run your water provider maintains and which is yours to replace is set by the provider rather than by the plumbing, and providers do not all set it the same way. Confirm it with yours instead of assuming.

A service line is a simple thing in a hard place: one pipe, one path, no branches, buried its whole length, carrying the demand of the house through a single bore. When it fails, it fails as a ground leak, and the signs are outdoor signs.

Ground that stays soft or wet in a line when nothing has been running. Water surfacing at a curb, a walkway edge, or a seam in a driveway. A stripe of lawn greener than what surrounds it, following a route you never mapped.

Indoors, the tell differs from anything a wall leak produces. The whole house weakens at once rather than one bathroom, and it stays weakened instead of coming and going. A continuous rushing sound carries at the point of entry with every fixture closed, and metered usage climbs while nobody changed a habit.

What it does not do is just as useful. It does not discolor the first draw at one sink and leave the others clean, and it does not put pinholes in a bathroom wall one year and a laundry wall the next. Being buried, it can leak a long time without touching the structure, which is why it gets found by a meter rather than by damage.

If the register still creeps after the house shutoff is closed, water is escaping in the ground between the meter and that valve. A buried leak left running undermines soil and slab edges long before anything shows indoors.

How the Piping Inside the House Fails

Interior piping fails the opposite way: gradually, in pieces, and in plain view.

Restriction builds inward from the pipe wall, so delivery fades over years rather than dropping in a week, and the fixtures farthest from the entry feel it first while a sink near it still seems fine. A clean transition where the two meet: The point of entry is where the buried run hands off to the house. When Replacing the Service Line Buys You Nothing

The honest half of this comparison is the case against doing both, and it is stronger than the sales version admits.

If the buried run is sound, replacing it won't deliver anything you can feel. It will not improve flow at a far bathroom, because that loss is being spent inside the walls. It will not stop pinholes, because pinholes are a property of the pipe they appear in. It will not extend the life of interior piping by a day.

A service line with no leak history, a clean meter test, and healthy readings at the entry is a pipe that says plainly it is not the problem. Age alone is not a finding, nor is a crew already on site. That a wall is open is a good reason to ask the question. It is not an answer to it.
