A Measured Standard Beats a Calendar | CSLB #1051553 | Se Habla Español

Compton wrote down a maintenance standard that almost no one expresses this way, and it repays borrowing whatever kind of property you own.

It does not say how often to clean. It says how full is too full, and then puts an outer limit on how long you may go without checking.

What we cover

What the Visit Covers on a Compton Line

01

A camera pass before anything is switched on, and a second one after

The first says whether the line can take pressure at all. The second is where the reading is taken, since that measurement only means anything on a clean wall.

02

A reading of how full the line was

Which standard does the city apply to interceptors, and what is a reasonable way to think about any line carrying grease? Condition first.

03

Interceptor access checked where one is present

The dimensions and the positions are set out in the code where anyone can read them. A cover somebody paved over is a compliance problem and a service problem at once.

04

The residential kitchen or laundry run, where the deposit is soft

A house line that has closed twice in a year is usually carrying a wall of cooled fat rather than a defect in the pipe. The camera says which of those it is, and a wall taken back to the pipe leaves the next lot of it nothing to hold on to.

05

A condition report you can hand to someone else

Including the visit where the finding turns out to be a replacement conversation, and somebody has to open it. → Sewer line repair compton

What we cover

What Keeps Bringing the Line Back

01

A line that closes again on a rhythm

Whatever is building up survives each visit. The City's own maintenance standard includes a way to measure that.

02

Deposit building on the wall of a commercial line

A kitchen line closing over years. The measurement that decides what to do is how much of the pipe's own diameter the deposit now occupies.

03

Mineral scale in an older run

A surface gone rough enough to hold on to whatever goes past it, which is a diameter problem and gets measured as one.

04

A commercial kitchen line that keeps arriving on the schedule

The version this page is really about, and the one where the city has published a way of thinking about it.

The City Measures Fullness, not Months

Compton runs a sewer overflow reduction program, and buried inside it is a maintenance standard that requires reading even if you have never owned an interceptor.

The rule is that a grease interceptor must be pumped at a frequency such that the combined grease and solids accumulation does not exceed 25% of the total liquid depth, and, in any case, not less than once every 6 months.

Look at the shape of that. The primary standard is a measurement of condition: a quarter full is the limit. The six-month figure is a backstop, there to make sure someone actually looks. That is a condition test with a maximum interval attached, which is a different animal from a schedule dressed up as a rule.

. A great many maintenance recommendations in this trade amount to a calendar, and a calendar is a guess made by somebody who has not looked inside your pipe. A percentage of depth is checkable. It produces one answer for a busy restaurant and another for a quiet one, and it answers differently again for the same restaurant two years apart. That is what a real standard looks like.

The same rules deal with access, and the numbers there are just as concrete. An access manhole is required over each chamber and over the sanitary tee, at least 24 inches in diameter, and each must be carried up to finished grade. Those are figures you can check with a tape before anyone arrives. The rule also requires that those manholes remain accessible, and that requirement is the one that bites: a cover buried under a new slab or an asphalt overlay makes the required inspection impossible, turning an ordinary service visit into an excavation.

Nothing here makes a residential drain a regulated thing. What it gives a homeowner is a method rather than a number: measure what is in the pipe against the pipe, and let the answer set the date.

How it runs

Reading the Line Before Touching it

Tell us how long the line goes between failures. That gap carries most of the diagnosis.

Nothing is decided about pressure until the inside of the line has been seen, so a pipe that will not survive jetting is identified while the hose is still coiled.

A pipe too far gone to hold it is a stop, and the visit turns into a different conversation.

Head and setting are picked off the recording rather than off the invoice.

The line is jetted, and the result is recorded on a second pass.

You get the footage, the finding, and a date for the next look that comes off what the footage showed.

What is the twenty-five percent rule?

The code sets the pumping frequency so that combined grease and solids remain below 25% of the total liquid depth, with a backstop of at least once every 6 months. Taking that reading is a dipstick job: a clean rod down through the access, the total liquid depth read off it, the grease and solids layers read off it, and the arithmetic done standing there. Anybody servicing an interceptor should be willing to show you the rod. It governs interceptors, which are commercial fittings, so nothing in it makes a residential drain regulated.

What do I need to have on site for a jetting visit?

An outside cleanout that can be reached and opened, a water source within reach of a hose, and somewhere for the truck to sit. On a commercial line, add somebody who can unlock the interceptor area.

How often should my kitchen line be jetted?

Whatever the last camera pass suggests. Any number given before someone has looked at your pipe is a guess with a figure attached to it. If nobody has ever put a camera down that line, then the camera is the purchase to make first, and the finding may well be that the line wants nothing to do with it this year.

Do you pump interceptors?

No. Pumping and interceptor certification fall outside our scope, and you hear that on the phone. Nothing gets quietly subcontracted.

Ours was paved over years ago. Does that matter?

It does. The inspection the rules contemplate cannot be performed through asphalt, so the first piece of work is to expose the chamber again and finish the access at the new grade. That carries its own opening, its own restoration and its own figure, and all of it gets settled before anybody arrives with a hose.

The line is already broken. Should it still be jetted?

No, and the recording is what settles it before a hose comes off the truck. A run in that condition is a replacement conversation, and the twenty-five percent reading has nothing left to say about it. What to ask for on that visit is the footage and a written finding, since whoever prices the replacement will be working off both.

Why a Percentage Beats a Calendar

Grease accumulates with use, and use is not uniform over time. A restaurant that changes its menu, gains a lunch trade, or installs a second fryer changes its rate of accumulation without touching its plumbing. A measurement can see that, and a standard expressed as a proportion of depth is doing arithmetic against the vessel it is written for. It asks the pipe how it is getting on and sets the next visit from the answer.

The same logic applies to a house, at a smaller scale and with the same force. A kitchen line in a house where somebody cooks daily and one where the family eats out are the same pipe with different careers, and the useful question in both cases is what is in there now. One camera pass answer it, and the answer produces an interval specific to that line. Early-stage coating on the wall usually means doing nothing yet and looking again later. A run down to half its diameter means something else entirely. This is why the refusal to sell a maintenance plan on this page is an argument and not merely a policy. A plan prices an interval in advance, which means pricing it before anyone has looked, which is the exact error the City's own standard is constructed to avoid. Booking the next visit off the last camera pass keeps the interval tied to the pipe.
