Dishwasher Installation & Hookup in Paramount, CA

Air-Gap Fitting Done the Way California Publishes It | First-Time Installs Where No Hookup Exists | CSLB #1051553 | Se Habla Español

A dishwasher has three connections, and any one of them can flood a kitchen quietly for a month. The supply, the drain, and the electrical each have their own way of going wrong, and the two that reach us most often are a unit that will not drain and a cabinet floor that has been wet since delivery day.

Ser Plumbing handles the plumbing side of dishwasher installation across Paramount and SE LA County: supply line, isolation valve, drain connection, and the air-gap fitting that California requires. We also do the harder version of this job, which is putting a dishwasher where a house has never had one.

If your new machine came home with a delivery crew and now will not drain, there is a good chance we know why before we arrive.

The problem

Why People Call

A handful of symptoms cover almost every call. Each one points somewhere different, and the difference is usually real money.

The brand-new dishwasher will not drain

The usual answer is a small plastic disc. Where the drain hose ties into a garbage disposal, the factory knockout plug must be punched out first, and a delivery crew that does not frequently do plumbing often leaves it in place. The machine is fine; the path is blocked.

There is water under the cabinet, and nobody can find it

The drain hose clamp at the disposal inlet and the supply elbow behind the unit are the two suspects. Both drip slowly, both drip out of sight, and both are quicker to fix than the cabinet floor they have been soaking.

The kitchen has never had a dishwasher

That is a real project rather than a hookup: a cabinet opening cut to size, a supply branch and a drain tie-in at the sink, an air-gap position in the counter or the sink deck, and a circuit. Worth planning properly.

The old copper supply line finally split

Soft copper behind a dishwasher work-hardens at the bend from years of vibration and then cracks. A braided stainless steel line is the modern answer, and it costs almost nothing to swap.

Local conditions

Kitchens in SE LA County

Kitchens in this housing stock have been remodeled in waves, and the plumbing under the sink often shows three generations of decisions stacked on top of each other. It is common to find a dishwasher teed off the cold or hot supply with no isolation valve of its own, which means any future service on the appliance starts by shutting off the whole house.

The other pattern is the missing air gap. California publishes an air-gap requirement for domestic dishwasher drainage, with the fitting mounted above the sink's flood-level rim, and the shortcut used in many other states is not published here as a substitute. Plenty of kitchens around here nonetheless have no fitting at all, usually because an appliance delivery replaced a machine and nothing else was touched.

What's covered

What's Covered

01

Standard replacement hookup

Old unit disconnected and pulled; new one set and leveled; supply connected with a braided line and a dedicated stop; drain routed through the air gap; knockout plug confirmed clear; and a full-cycle run before we leave.

02

Air-gap fitting supply and installation

Where a fitting is missing or was never installed, we fit one at the sink deck or counter. For stone countertops, a new hole means a diamond core, so we identify that before the day rather than on the day.

03

First-time installs where no hookup exists

Supply branch, drain tie-in, isolation valve, air gap, and the cabinet opening, coordinated with whoever handles the cabinetry and the circuit so the appliance arrives to a ready space.

04

Disposal and appliance line work in the same visit

If the disposal is on its way out or the refrigerator line needs replacing, doing it while the sink base is open saves a second call. /garbage-disposal-installation

Cost drivers: whether a dedicated shutoff already exists, whether an air gap is present, what the counter is made of if a new opening is needed, and whether the run to the sink has to be created rather than reconnected.

The visit

How a Dishwasher Hookup Works

01

Tell us whether this is a swap or a first-time install, and whether there is an air gap on the sink deck now. Those two answers shape the visit.

02

On arrival: water off, old unit disconnected and drawn out, and the cabinet base inspected for damage nobody knew about.

03

Supply connected with a braided stainless line and its own isolation valve, so the next service call does not involve the whole house.

04

Drain routed through the air gap, and where the tie-in is at a disposal, the knockout plug is confirmed clear before anything is connected.

05

Unit leveled and secured, connections torqued rather than hand-tightened, and the floor protected the whole time.

06

A full cycle run with the panel off, so any weep at a joint shows up while we are standing there instead of six weeks later.

Why Ser Plumbing

Why Ser Plumbing for Dishwasher Work

01

We run a cycle before we leave

Most leaks on this job announce themselves during the drain phase under real pressure and real flow. Watching one full cycle with the kick panel off is the difference between a finished job and a job that looks finished.

02

The air gap goes in as California publishes it

The state publishes an air-gap requirement for dishwasher drainage rather than the loop method used elsewhere. We fit one, and where a kitchen has none, we say so instead of connecting around the question.

03

The knockout plug gets checked as a matter of course

It is thirty seconds of work, and a plug left in place is among the commonest reasons a brand-new dishwasher will not drain. Skipping it produces a service call that should never have existed.

04

Your own shutoff, while the cabinet is open

Adding a dedicated stop during an install costs very little. Not having one means every future repair on that appliance starts with the main valve.

Expertise

Two Things That Cause Most Dishwasher Callbacks

The first is the plug. Garbage disposals leave the factory with the dishwasher inlet sealed with a knockout because many disposals are installed in kitchens with no dishwasher at all. When a machine is later connected to that inlet, the plug has to be driven out and fished out of the disposal chamber. Miss it, and the dishwasher pumps against a closed port: standing water in the tub, an error code, and a homeowner convinced the new appliance is defective. It is a genuinely common outcome when installation is bundled with delivery rather than done by a trade.

The second is the air gap. California requires that a domestic dishwasher discharge through a listed air-gap fitting positioned above the flood-level rim of the sink, and the high-loop arrangement accepted in many states is not published here as an equivalent. The point of the fitting is to make it physically impossible for wastewater to be drawn back into a dishwashing machine. Two thirty-second checks, the knockout and the air-gap position, and neither of them belongs to the homeowner.

Dishwasher Installation FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear on the phone every week.

Do I need a plumber to hook up a dishwasher?
For a straight swap in a kitchen that already has a stop, an air gap and a clear disposal inlet, plenty of people manage it. For anything else, and for every first-time install, the plumbing is the part that decides whether the kitchen stays dry.
Why is my new dishwasher not draining?
Most often, the knockout plug in the garbage disposal inlet was never removed. Second, most often the drain hose is kinked behind the unit or the air gap is blocked. All three are quick to fix.
Do I need an air gap in California?
The state publishes an air-gap requirement for domestic dishwasher drainage, with the fitting above the sink's flood-level rim. The loop method used in other states is not published here as a substitute.
Can you install one where the kitchen has never had one?
Yes, and it is a real project rather than a hookup. Supply branch, drain tie-in, isolation valve, air-gap position, and a cabinet opening cut to the appliance, with the circuit handled by an electrician.
Does it connect to hot or cold water?
The hot side. A long run from the water heater means the first fill arrives cool and the cycle takes longer, which is one of the quieter arguments for a recirculation loop in a spread-out house. → /hot-water-recirculation-pump-installation
Do you do the electrical?
No. The circuit and any hardwiring belong to an electrician, and we sequence our work so the handoff is straightforward.
Will you take the old machine away?
Ask when you book. We disconnect and pull it either way; whether it leaves with us depends on the job, and we would rather agree on that in advance than assume.
