Downey's Sewer System Management Plan describes the public system in unusually plain terms. It is a well-documented public system, and the documentation stops at the property line.

That is a fact about the city's pipe, and it matters to yours because of where the two meet. A house of that era with cast iron below it is running iron out to a clay main laid in the same window, and the point of transition is a junction between two materials that age along completely different paths. Iron gives up its wall from the inside. Clay does not corrode at all. Reading a Wall That is Still Standing

Cast iron corrodes from the inside out, and the process leaves the pipe's exterior looking much as it always did. Two things happen to the interior. Corrosion product builds outward from the wall into the flow, roughening a surface that was smooth and taking away usable bore, so the line carries less and catches more. And in the wetted zone at the invert, where the flow sits, the metal is worked hardest and thins fastest. That is why the invert is where a run gives out first, and why the top of the picture alone will not tell you the pipe's condition.

There is also a slower process in which the iron is gradually leached away, and what remains behind holds the pipe's shape but retains little of its strength. It is the reason cast iron has to be graded along the length and around the section, noting where the bore has closed and where the wall has gone thin, before anyone talks about scope. A run with two thin lengths and forty good feet is a different project from one that is uniformly finished. Both look alike in a single still frame.

How do I know whether my sewer is cast iron?

You can read this yourself at the cleanout before anyone visits. Tap it: cast iron sounds dull where clay rings. Look at the fitting: iron leaves rust-colored staining around it, and clay does not.

Does the whole run have to be replaced?

Not necessarily, and that is the point of grading it. A useful thing to ask any contractor who says yes: which lengths, at what distances, and what the wall looked like at each. A run that has genuinely finished shows the same condition at every distance. One that has not will show sound pipe between the bad.

Can it be lined instead of replaced?

Will you have to dig up the street?

It turns on where the failure sits, and the locate records that as a measured distance from the access. Get the number before you compare quotes. Work reaching into the public right-of-way is a different undertaking from work within your boundary, and two estimates that disagree on the distance are not describing the same job.

Do trees affect where the new line can go?

They can. Walk the likely route yourself first and note anything established growing within about ten feet of it, including what stands on the far side of a fence, since a clearance measured in feet does not stop at a boundary. Raise what you find early. A route change is a design decision, and a poor moment to discover one is with the trench already open.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Two desks here, and sewer work goes to the City Engineer. Ask which one a quote has budgeted for. Useful if you are comparing quotes and one of them names the wrong department.
